Boswellic acids are a series of pentacyclic triterpene molecules which are produced by plants in the genus Boswellia
Studies have shown that the boswellic acids have an anti-inflammatory action much like the conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for inflammatory conditions. In contrast to NSAIDs, which are well known to disrupt glycosaminoglycan synthesis, thus accelerating articular damage in arthritic conditions, boswellic acids have been shown to significantly reduce glycosaminoglycan degradation.

An open multi-centre veterinary clinical trial, comparing conditions before and after treatment with a herbal dietary supplement consisting of a natural resin extract of Boswellia serrata, was conducted by 10 practicing veterinarians in Switzerland. This traditional plant-based supplement is known for its anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory properties. 29 dogs with manifestations of chronic joint and spinal disease were enrolled. Osteoarthritis and degenerative conditions were confirmed radiologically in 25 of 29 cases. The Boswellia resin extract (BSB108, product of Bogar AG) was administered with the regular food at a dose of 400 mg/10 kg body weight once daily for 6 weeks. Already after two weeks of treatment, an overall efficacy of Boswellia was evident in 71% of 24 eligible dogs. A statistically significant reduction of severity and resolution of typical clinical signs in individual animals, such as intermittent lameness, local pain and stiff gait, were reported after 6 weeks. Because quality and stability of the boswellia resin extract were ensured, these data suggest that a standardized preparation can be recommended as a herbal dietary supplement providing symptomatic support in canine osteoarthritic disease

In studies, compared with a placebo, treatment with Boswellia resin resulted in a significant reduction in pain, time duration of morning stiffness and 'joint and disability score' among patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Other research has shown treatment with an extract of the gum resin of Boswellia, reduced joint swelling, pain, stiffness and the need to use NSAIDs in 260 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Similar beneficial results have been found in osteoarthritic cases. Boswellic acids function as potent anti-inflammatory agents in rheumatic conditions, being especially effective in shrinking inflamed tissues. Boswellic acids improve blood supply to the joints and restore the integrity of blood vessels obliterated by spasm. They may also open up collateral blood circulation to provide adequate blood supply to the joints.
CHOLESTEROL LOWERING - An alcoholic extract of B. serrata gum resin in doses of 25-50mg/kg of body weight resulted in a 30-50% decrease in cholesterol levels and a 20-60% decrease in triglyceride levels. In a 1998 study of Boswellia's effects on bronchial asthma, 40 patients took 300 mg of a Boswellia preparation three times daily for six weeks, while another 40 patients took a placebo. Seventy percent of patients taking Boswellia demonstrated significant disease improvement, measured by symptomatology and objective measures of lung and immune function; only 27 percent of patients taking a placebo improved
ANTI-ULCER - Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon, in which leukotrienes appear to play a role in maintaining the inflammation. In a study conducted by Gupta and colleagues, patients suffering from ulcerative colitis were given B. serrata gum resin 350mg three times daily to six weeks. Patients receiving sulfasalazine (1g three times daily) served as controls. Improvement in all measured parameters was observed in response to treatment with B. serrata gum resin and sulfasalazine. Eighty-two percent of patients treated with B. serrata went into remission compared to 75% with sulfasalazine. The results of this study indicate that B. serrata gum resin may be equally as successful in treatment of ulcerative colitis as standard therapy.
